Web Player

Show your content in a browser with play.pixlova.com, with nothing to install.

The web Player runs in a browser, at https://play.pixlova.com. It suits a smart TV, a tablet, a computer or a signage player that can open a web page.

A Player that depends on the browser

The browser may clear its storage, pause the tab or refuse full screen. For a screen that must keep playing without Internet, prefer a native Player (Windows, Linux or Raspberry Pi).

Supported browsers

  • Chrome 67, Edge 79, Firefox 68, Safari 14 (iOS and iPadOS 14) or later;
  • the built-in browsers (WebView) of Android signage players, for example NovaStar.

On an older browser, the page shows “This browser is too old”.

Private browsing does not work: the Player needs the browser’s storage to run.

  1. On the device plugged into the screen, open https://play.pixlova.com.
  2. A pairing code in the XXXX-XXXX format appears. It is valid for 5 minutes; a new code appears on its own when it expires.
  3. In Pixlova, open Screens › All screens, click + Add a screen, then enter this code in the Code shown on the screen field. The details are in the Screens section.
  4. On the device, click Start display: the page switches to full screen and sound is turned on.

Once linked, the screen shows its content as soon as it is scheduled. While nothing is on screen yet, “Loading content…” shows the download progress. Content already on screen stays there while the next one downloads.

Browser identity

The web Player is tied to the browser’s data. If you clear the site’s data, or change profile or browser, the device becomes a new Player: you need to link it again with a new code.

Several screens on one device

A browser is a single Player in Pixlova. Each address is one of its outputs, showing its own screen:

AddressOutput
https://play.pixlova.com/ or https://play.pixlova.com/1First output
https://play.pixlova.com/2Second output
https://play.pixlova.com/3, and so on up to /99Next outputs

Each free output shows its own code: the screen entered with this code is bound to this output. The outputs share the same pairing, but each keeps its own screen and content.

  • Open one window per screen, in full screen: the browser may slow down a background tab.
  • If the same address is open in two tabs, the second one stops and says so.
  • The browser’s storage space is shared by all outputs.

Signage players and embedded pages

For a signage player (NovaStar with ViPlex Express or VNNOX, another Android box) or a page embedded in a frame, add https://play.pixlova.com/ as a full-frame web page. The Player recognizes it and then shows neither the Start display button nor the full-screen alert.

If your player is not recognized, use the address https://play.pixlova.com/?embedded.

Force the screen size

When the page is, for example, 1920 × 1080 but the screen only shows part of it (LED wall behind a controller, portrait screen, unusual format), add the size=<width>x<height> parameter, in screen pixels:

  • https://play.pixlova.com/?size=1080x1920
  • combined with an embedded player: https://play.pixlova.com/?embedded&size=768x432

The Player only uses this area, at the top left of the page, and declares it as the size of its output. An unreadable value is reported on screen and the whole page is used.

Keep content offline

At startup, the Player asks the browser for persistent storage, which prevents the browser from clearing content when space runs low:

  • Chrome and Edge only grant it to an installed app: ⋮ menu › Install Pixlova Player;
  • Firefox asks you;
  • Safari decides on its own.

If persistent storage is refused, the Player still works, but a warning shows for 30 seconds at startup: the browser may then clear offline content.

Once content is downloaded, the Player can keep playing it after the page is reloaded without network. This is not guaranteed on every browser.

Kiosk mode

On a dedicated computer, open https://play.pixlova.com/ in Chrome with the --kiosk --autoplay-policy=no-user-gesture-required options. The page opens in full screen and videos can play with sound without any action on your part.

Language and time

  • The Player uses the browser’s language, French or English (English for any other language). In Chrome, the --lang=fr option forces French.
  • The Player uses the Pixlova server’s time rather than the device’s, which is often off on Android players.

Player status

Press the i key on the keyboard to show or hide the Player status: version, output, cloud connection, persistent storage, storage used, clock, display area, screen and last error.

Updates

A new version of the web Player downloads in the background and applies the next time the page loads, without interrupting current playback.
